Weekly Tasks
Set aside a little time once a week to check in on your plants. This is the perfect time to:
- Check the Soil: This is your most important task. Check the soil moisture of each plant to see if it needs watering. Remember to water based on need, not a rigid schedule.
- Rotate Your Plants: Give each plant a quarter turn to ensure all sides get even light exposure. This prevents them from leaning towards the light source.
- Dust the Leaves: A quick wipe with a damp cloth removes dust, which helps the plant photosynthesize more efficiently and keeps it looking its best.
Monthly Tasks
Once a month, you can perform some deeper care tasks:
- Fertilize (During Growing Season): Most houseplants benefit from fertilizing during the spring and summer. Use a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half-strength.
- Prune: Trim any yellow or dead leaves. You can also prune for shape or to encourage bushier growth.
- Check for Pests: Do a thorough inspection of the leaves (especially the undersides) and soil for any signs of pests like spider mites or mealybugs.
Seasonal Tasks
Your care routine will change slightly with the seasons.
- Spring: This is the best time for repotting if your plant has outgrown its current home. Growth will be vigorous, so you may need to water more frequently.
- Summer: Continue regular watering and fertilizing. Protect plants from intense, direct sun.
- Fall: As the days get shorter, growth will slow. Gradually reduce the frequency of watering and stop fertilizing.
- Winter: Most plants are dormant in the winter. They will need significantly less water. Be careful not to overwater during this time.
