Light Requirements
Snake Plants are renowned for their ability to tolerate a wide range of light conditions. While they are famous for surviving in low light, they actually perform best in medium to bright indirect light. More light will lead to faster growth and more vibrant leaf coloration. Avoid intense, direct sun, which can scorch the leaves.
Watering
This is the most critical part of Snake Plant care. They are succulents, meaning they store water in their leaves and are extremely susceptible to root rot. You must let the soil dry out completely between waterings. In medium light, this could mean watering only every 3-4 weeks. In winter, you might only water them once every month or two. When in doubt, do not water!
Soil & Potting
A well-draining soil mix is essential. Use a cactus or succulent potting mix, or amend a regular potting mix with perlite or sand to increase drainage. Ensure your pot has a drainage hole. Snake Plants do well when they are slightly root-bound, so you won't need to repot them very often—typically only every 2-3 years.
Benefits
Besides being incredibly low-maintenance, Snake Plants are also excellent air purifiers. They are known for their ability to remove toxins like formaldehyde and benzene from the air, making them a healthy and beautiful addition to any room.
