How to Know When to Water
The most common question in plant care is "How often should I water my plant?" The answer is simple: water when the plant needs it, not on a fixed schedule. The best way to check is by feeling the soil. Stick your finger about 1-2 inches deep. If the soil feels dry, it's time to water. If it's still moist, hold off for a few more days. Plants like succulents and cacti prefer to dry out completely, while ferns and tropicals like to stay more consistently moist.
The Right Way to Water
When you do water, do it thoroughly. Pour water slowly and evenly over the soil surface until it begins to drain out of the bottom of the pot. This ensures that the entire root ball gets a good drink. After a few minutes, discard any excess water from the saucer. Letting a plant sit in water is a leading cause of root rot.
Factors That Affect Watering Frequency
Remember that every plant and home is different. You may need to adjust your watering routine based on several factors:
- Light: Plants in brighter light will use water more quickly.
- Temperature & Humidity: Warmer, drier air causes soil to dry out faster.
- Pot Type: Terracotta pots are porous and dry out faster than plastic or glazed ceramic pots.
- Time of Year: Plants need less water during their dormant period in the fall and winter.
